I never realized how much I missed John Hughes until he was gone. He understood suburbia but never mocked it harshly, understood teenage angst but never celebrated it, and understood geeks and never denigrated them.

He made his directorial debut in 1984, the greatest year ever for movies, with Sixteen Candles, my favorite of his.

Guys like to think that we're Jake, but really, we're just varying shades of Farmer Ted.
