Classic white liberal guilt says: Society sucks, so who is to blame?
Me, the individual? No, humanism tells me that I am good and my causes are just, therefore, I am, by my very nature, not part of the problem.
Society? No. Society cannot suck in and of itself, as government and education is the solution to, and not the cause of, all the world's problems.
Why, then, does society suck so much?
It must be somebody else. It must be them. And since I absolved myself and society from white liberal guilt, that guilt is now theirs. Whether they are actually guilty or not makes little difference: They must be guilty, as they are not me and not part of my world.
The thought that we are all born to sin and each of us shares the same common stain of human frailty just doesn't enter the picture. Some people, after all, are born to be lightworkers and are above such things. If they are free from sin, by supporting them, I am free as well.
It's everyone else that sucks. Never me, and never the people that I believe in.
*Update: *Craig Ferguson thinks it's worse than I imagine: Everything sucks. (via Jonah).
Congratulations, Craig, you've managed reach a conclusion that others came to over two thousand years ago.
